Seafarers on board need no visa

In the past non-EU seafarers required visa for their employment on board of German-flagged seagoing ships. This was changed in September 2013 by an amendment of the German residence act.

Now a visa is only required, if a foreign seafarer enters Germany or another EU member state for a longer stay. Non-EU seafarers employed on a German-flagged ship engaged on domestic voyages must apply for a visa, as they are staying on German territory.

For a short shore leave of seafarers in German ports special regulations apply.

Neither do foreign seafarers need a special work permit for their employment on board of a German-flagged ship.
