Ship's garbage (Annex V)
New regulations regarding ship’s garbage
The revised MARPOL annex V has been adopted by resolution MEPC.201(62) of the Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). It has entered into force on 1 January 2013 entailing the following substantial changes:
- Generally no garbage must be discharged into the sea,
- Exceptions still apply for particular kinds of garbage,
- Animal carcasses and cooking oil are introduced as new garbage categories,
- Cargo hold wash water may be discharged under certain restrictions,
- Lost fishing gear must be reported to the responsible authorities.
Guidelines for implementation of the new regulations
For the implementation of MARPOL annex V the following resolutions have been developed and adopted at the 63rd session of the Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) of the IMO in March 2012:
