Accidents involving seagoing ships may have serious consequences. International liability conventions specifiy uniform global standards for determining who is liable and how victims are compensated. There are various compulsory insurances for the operation of a ship.

Shipping companies with ships flying the German Flag benefit financially from:

• tonnage tax,
• 100% wage tax deduction,
• non-wage labour cost subsidies,
• training place subsidies and
• vocational training subsidies.

This German Flag support is a long-term commitment. An important basis for the support of the German Flag is the joint agreements between the federal government, the federal states and the social partners in the ‘Maritime Alliance’.
