Why are only recognized medical practitioners allowed to examine?
Only specially trained and qualified physicians know what needs to be considered during a medical examination of a sea pilot. Sea pilots ensure safety of maritime navigation and they prevent collisions and other accidents of seagoing ships with their piloting consultation for particular maritime areas. While at work, they have to be thoroughly fit and resilient in terms of their health.
That is why the Maritime Medical Service of the BG Verkehr only approves select and highly qualified physicians for medical examinations of sea pilots. The Maritime Medical Service trains the recognized medical practitioners on a regular basis and checks their work on site.
Qualification of the recognized medical practitioners
The physicians performing medical examinations of sea pilots require an approval by the Maritime Medical Service of the BG Verkehr. This approval consists of two elements:
- As a foundation, an approval to perform examinations of fitness for sea service,
- Which is then built upon with an approval for provisions regarding a sea pilot's medical fitness, including:
- Accompanying at least three piloting consultations on seagoing ships in German maritime waters (one during the night),
- Participation in a course by the Maritime Medical Service as an introduction into the basics of medical examinations of sea pilots.
The Approval requirements are stipulated in the German "Seelotseignungsverordnung" Sec. (§) 7 (in German only).
