Flag State, classification societies

According to the International Convention on the Law of the Sea every state is responsible for the ships flying its flag. Germany as a flag state takes its responsibility for safety as well as for working and living conditions on German-flagged seagoing ships very seriously. Different from other flags Germany employs state-run agencies rather than private companies to ensure that requirements are complied with. Only in narrowly defined areas, e. g., surveys of ships abroad, private companies (classification societies) are authorized to act on behalf of the German administration. The flag state administration supervises classification societies acting on its behalf.

Part of the flag state administration are:

  • BG Verkehr (Ship Safety Division),
  • the Federal Maritime and Hdrographic Agency (Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie, BSH),
  • the "Bundesnetzagentur" (Federal Network Agency)
  • the shipping registers.

Moreover, further institutions offer information about training, job opportunities and health care at ports, among other things.

Many former masters and marine engineers with many years of experience at sea work at the German flag state administration. They know what they are talking about. Here at German Flag, we literally want to be close to our customers' needs. Out of Hamburg our specialists of the flag state administration are quickly with the German shipping companies.

The German Flag State Administration is certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001:2015. The certificates for the BG Verkehr (Ship Safety Division) and the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) certify a high quality of work.
